After earning a Master of Science degree in Enology from UC Davis at age 28, David Ramey worked at wineries in France and California. In 1996 he and wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars, dedicated to creating high quality, hand-crafted wines with balance and richness from the area’s finest vineyards. And they have remained steadfast to those guiding principles.
The 2014 Napa Valley Claret, a Cabernet Sauvignon based blend, is an excellent expression of the Ramey philosophy. Sourced from various vineyards in Napa Valley appellations, and a tiny bit from Sonoma, the wine is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (24%), Malbec (7%), with a bit of Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc for the remaining 6 percent. A medium to full bodied red wine, with aromas of dark cherries and plum on the nose, a luscious texture and mouthfeel, with tame tannins, the wine is simply delicious, and most importantly, very food friendly. We recently enjoyed a bottle, with friends of course, Lasagne Verdi alla Bolognese, and Bistecca alla Fiorentina. It was perfect.
The winery, located in Healdsburg, is open for tasting only by appointment, Monday through Friday at 10 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm, or on Saturday at 10 am and 2 pm. The winery website is: www.rameywine.com. For more information, you may call the winery at (707) 433-0870.
