Wine of the Month

Wine of the Month for February - Stags’ Leap Winery Merlot 2015 Napa Valley

One of California’s earliest wine estates (grapes first planted on the property in 1872), Stags’ Leap Winery has been, and continues to be, one of Napa Valley’s premier winery. Although Merlot is often thought of as a second wine (second to Cabernet Sauvignon) and erroneously dismissed by Cabernet aficionados, this Napa Valley wine is exceptional and extremely versatile wine for any and all occasions.

Fruit flavors of dark cherry and plum, combined with subtle notes of cinnamon and cocoa, with a firm structure and soft, silky tannins, make for a delicious Napa Valley Classic. This is Merlot at its best.

For the entire month of February 2019, we are offering the Stags’ Leap 2015 Merlot at the reduced price of $44 per 750 ml bottle or $11 per glass. I think you will agree this wine is a classic.

Wine of the Month for November 2018 - Nielson Pinot Noir 2015 Sta. Rita Hills

In 1964 Uriel Nielson planted the first commercial vineyard in Santa Barbara County, a region, considered at the time, too cold to grow grapes. He proved them wrong. Today, winemakers Jonathan Nagy and Ryan Pace continue to craft Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that express the purity and diversity of cool climate coastal AVAs.

The 2015 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir is a balanced and elegant wine, to be enjoyed with a variety of cuisines. Soft and smooth on the palate with a smokey cherry finish, Biba and I have had this wine with many pasta dishes, as well as with beef. veal, lamb, and pork, and it always enhances the meal. We love Pinot Noir and the Nielson 2015 is special.

For the entire month of November 2018, we are offering the Nielson Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2015 at the reduced price of $40 per 750 ml bottle and $10 per glass. Biba and I love this wine....and I think you will agree.

Wine of the Month for October 2018 - Boeger Winery Zinfandel 2016 Walker Vineyard El Dorado

Wine of the Month for October 2018 - Boeger Winery Zinfandel 2016 Walker Vineyard El DoradoIt is always a pleasure to write about - as well as taste - Boeger wines. The winery was established in 1972 by Greg and Sue Boeger and remains 100% family owned to this day. Greg had just graduated from UC Davis with a viticulture and ag economics degree, and converted a pear farm into a thriving grape growing winery. Today Greg’s son Justin carries out the winemaking chores with the same meticulous attention to detail. Biba Restaurant has had a Boeger wine on the Wine List since our opening in 1986.

The 2016 Walker Zinfandel is not the usual heavy, over-the-top California Zinfandel. It is dark in color, smooth in texture with a slight peppery yet mild mouthfeel and finish. It is definitely a Zinfandel worth tasting and is one of my favorites. Zinfandel generally complements Italian cuisine very nicely, and the Walker Zin is top notch. Biba and I recently enjoyed a bottle, with family of course, over dinner of Cotolette alla Milanese. It was perfect....I thought I was in Milano.

For the entire month of October 2018 we are offering the Boeger Walker Zinfandel 2016 at the reduced price of $38 per 750 ml bottle or $9.50 per glass. I think you will like this wine.

Wine of the month for September 2018 - Meiomi Pinot Noir 2016

MEIOMI PINOT NOIR 2016By popular demand, we are continuing our August special through September.

Meiomi means “coast” in the language of the native, coastal dwelling Wappo and Yuki tribes. Joe Wagner developed Meiomi in 2006 while working for his father, Chuck, at Caymus Vineyard. The wine was instantly a huge success, and rightly so. With grapes sourced from Monterey County (60%), Santa Barbara County (23%), and Sonoma County (17%), this medium body wine is mouthwatering, easy to drink, and simply a bargain.

A hint of Bing cherries and other red fruit, a deft touch of sweetness, and just the right amount of oak influence with tame tannins, all make for a delicious wine for every day and any day. And as a bonus, this California Pinot Noir can be enjoyed with pasta, fish, fowl, or red meat. Biba and I recently shared a bottle with our two daughters, and of course, we all had something different to eat. I’m sure you understand.

For the entire month of September 2018, we are offering the 2016 Meiomi Pinot Noir at the reduced price of $36 per 750 ml bottle or $9 per glass. I think you will like this wine.
